The word Pudhuvai is the correct way to call Pondicherry in origin of the vernacular Tamil and the short form of the city’s name called by the native people of this state. Pudhuvai has been recorded in many printed books during the French period. Pudhuvai has been recorded in banknotes printed during the French period. The name Pudhuvai is recorded in several places in Anantharanga's diary, which is considered a historical book of Pondicherry. National poet Bharathi and state poet Bharathidasan have used the term "pudhuvai" in many places in their works.
